A+ certification from CompTIA is the most recognized and trusted certification for entry-level service technicians.

CompTIA A+ certification is an international, vendor-neutral certification that proves a technician's competency in installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security, and troubleshooting. CompTIA A+ certification also validates that technicians have excellent customer service and communication skills.

CompTIA A+ is part of specialized certification tracks for corporations such as Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Cisco, and Novell. Other technology companies, including CompuCom and Ricoh, have made CompTIA A+ certification mandatory for their service technicians.

About the Exams

Two 100-question exams are required for CompTIA A+ certification: CompTIA A+ Essentials (Exam 220-801) and CompTIA A+ Practical Application (Exam 220-802). You will have 90 minutes to complete each exam.

CompTIA A+ Essentials: Examines the skills and understanding appropriate for an entry-level IT professional, including communication and professional skills. A passing score is 675 out of 900 possible points.

CompTIA A+ Practical Application: A more hands-on version of the Essentials exam, with emphasis on applying troubleshooting processes and tools to solve scenario-based problems. A passing score is 700 out of 900 possible points.

Exam Renewal

Beginning January 1, 2011, CompTIA A+ certification holders are required to renew their credential every three years. Renewal can be achieved two ways:

1. Take the most current version of the CompTIA A+ certification exams.

2. Earn continuing education units (CEUs) by participating in qualified activities, such as publishing an article or white paper, obtaining another industry certification, or attending a relevant conference or event. The CompTIA A+ certification renewal requires 20 CEUs per renewal period.

CompTIA Network+ Certification

The CompTIA Network+ certification can be a stepping stone for vendor-specific certifications, such as Cisco CCNA and Microsoft MCSA.

CompTIA Network+ is an international, vendor-neutral certification that proves a technician's competency in managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing, and configuring basic network infrastructure. Since its introduction in 1999, more than 235,000 people have become CompTIA Network+ certified.

Microsoft includes CompTIA Network+ certification in their Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) program, and other corporations such as Novell, Cisco, and HP recognize CompTIA Network+ as part of their certification tracks.

We recommend that CompTIA Network+ candidates are CompTIA A+ certified and have at least nine months of experience in network support, administration, or education.

About the Exam

The CompTIA Network+ certification exam covers topics such as network technologies, network media and topologies, and network management, tools, security, and devices. You'll have 90 minutes to complete 100 questions. A passing score is 720 out of 900 possible points.

CASP is CompTIA's first mastery-level certification for enterprise technical security leads.

CASP certification is an international, vendor-neutral certification that designates IT professionals with advanced-level security skills and knowledge. Achieving CASP certification proves your competency in enterprise security, risk management, research and analysis, and integrating computing, communications, and business disciplines.

Becoming CASP certified confirms that you have the technical knowledge and skills required to conceptualize, design, and engineer secure solutions across complex enterprise environments. CASP certifies that you can apply critical thinking and judgment across a broad spectrum of security disciplines to propose and implement solutions that map to enterprise drivers.

Prerequisites

CASP certification is ideal for IT security professionals who have at least 10 years of experience in IT administration, including at least five years of hands-on technical security experience. While there is no required prerequisite, CASP certification is intended to follow CompTIA Security+ or equivalent experience and has a technical, hands-on focus at the enterprise level.

About the Exam

You will have 150 minutes to complete the 80-question, multiple-choice CASP certification exam (CAS-001). The scenario- and performance-based exam covers:

• Enterprise security

• Risk management, policy/procedure, and legal issues

• Research and analysis

• Integration of computing, communications, and business disciplines

Exam Renewal and the Continuing Education Program

CompTIA requires that CASP certification holders renew their credential every three years. Renewal can be achieved two ways:

• Take the most current version of the CASP certification exam.

• Earn continuing education units (CEUs) by participating in qualified activities, such as publishing an article or white paper, obtaining another industry certification, or attending a relevant conference or event. CASP certification renewal requires 75 CEUs per renewal period.

Certifications earned in 2011 and beyond contain the designation "CE", indicating the certification is subject to the renewal policy. If you achieved certification prior to 2011 (the non-CE version), you will retain your certification for life. No renewal is required, although you may choose to or be required to enroll in the continuing education program. The program requires an annual fee based on the CompTIA certification you are renewing. If you have multiple CompTIA certifications, you only need to pay the annual fee and earn CEUs for the highest-level certification you are renewing. Earning a "CE" designation on your highest-level certification automatically grants a "CE" designation for your lower-level certifications.
